All That Glitters Is Gold

I have always been obsessed with The Golden Girls – unhealthily so. Ever since their debut on this very day, September 14, 1985, I have been a viewer. Me and my mom would watch it together at night and would have us in fits of laughter. There was self centered Blanche, dry witted Dorothy, dimwitted Rose, and old, wisecracking Sophia. They were comedy gold, so to speak. They were the funniest ladies on TV since Laverne & Shirley and I’m well aware that statement ages me. The girls took me through middle school, a notoriously awkward phase and It took me through high school, an even more awkward phase. I watched it throughout college when I could since I was busy studying or hanging out with friends. Then I watched it throughout my first pregnancy because it provided some much needed relief in such a lonely time – no father for the baby and living with my parents. It was a sticky situation indeed. I’m sure the baby heard “Thank You For Being A Friend” too many times to count and might come out singing it. When the baby was born, I watched them from my hospital bed while I recovered from my C-section which was also a lonely time since everyone was at work during the day. I remember them talking about little Yemini who skied backwards on buttermilk and laughing so hard I thought my stitches would come loose. Needless to say my son loves the Golden Girls to this day, especially Sophia. I prefer Dorothy and her dry sense of humour but  am so much more like Blanche. I have all the seasons on DVD which have been watched repeatedly. My only wish was that there were more but there are no more to be had. Blanche, Dorothy and Sophia have all left us for that lanai in that lanai sky.
