Oh, the Humanity

What is wrong with people? Do we live in such a cold, uncaring society that we would stand by and watch another human being die and not lift a finger to help? Apparently so. Such an appalling incident occurred in NYC. Here is the article. One man pushed another man onto some subway tracks and ran off. It’s happened before and, unfortunately, it will happen again. Okay, the fact that someone would do that to begin with is bad enough but what’s worse is, in that 1 minute the victim had to climb back onto the platform, not one soul lifted a finger to help him. People just watched while the poor man struggled to climb out as he faced an oncoming train. Not one person stepped in to help. I wonder how many people were tweeting about it. It’s especially appalling that a photographer was snapping picture after picture, totally devoid of a moral compass. To save face, the photographer says he couldn’t help the man. If you have time to take 50 pictures then you have a minute to save a life. If I was the photographer, I would be ashamed to show my face – ever again.

While these bystanders stood by like zombies, the papers are just as shameless. The New York Post had those pictures plastered on the front page with an awful headline. They have a lot to answer for. Whoever the cold-blooded person is calling the shots needs to get canned. I’ll make sure to never buy that trashy rag.

Years ago I was suffering constant panic attacks that were relentless. Strangely enough, in my 20′s, I had an overwhelming fear that I was going to have a heart attack, which was totally unfounded, just delusions brought on by severe panic disorder. The fear was compounded when I went into a public place. I would feel lightheaded and I just knew something bad was going to happen. What if I had this heart attack in WalMart, for instance? I would be laying there like a fool with no one to help me. I confided my fears in a friend of mine who was a psychologist student at the time. He was pretty level-headed and asked me if any of these scenarios played out, did I really think no one was going to help me. Of course, the answer was obvious, somebody would help me or at least call for help. That was 15 years ago. The world has changed a lot and it hasn’t been for the better.

Where’s the humanity? Where’s our love for our fellow man? While I may be not be Bob Geldof, I do have a conscience. I certainly wouldn’t be able to sleep at night knowing that someone wasn’t home with their family because of me. I hope these people enjoy the holidays with their families because the victim won’t be. They have a lot more than an oncoming train coming there way.

I agree with you 100 percent. God has placed me in situations where someone was in dire need and nobody would help them accept for me. I could not live with myself if I didn’t help and it angered me that no one else would. You would think at Christmas time people would be a little more humane to one another.

At least you have a moral compass Cindy.God sees everything and there is a reward in heaven for people that do the right thing. I know it sounds simple and preachy but I believe it. Maybe some of the people were just shocked or afraid that they were gonna be pushed as well but if you have time to take a photo, you obviously aren’t either of those.

My mom said something similar, that she would be worried about being pulled in. I would have grabbed the biggest guy next to me and we would have pulled him out together. You never really now what you’re going to do in situations like that but I do know I would have done SOMETHING! You obviously have a moral compass too and I am glad you worte this piece.

I’ve never met your mom, perhaps I will next time I come into town. I’m glad you approve :)
