A Few Good Points

Summer is officially over in Germany. As I write this, I am wondering where on earth it went. It seems like it was just here a minute ago but it blew away and now it’s snowing. It’s hardly fair, a month or two of summer and 6 or 7 months of winter. I’m watching it steadily come down outside. I’m wondering if my son is having fun running around in the snow with his friends. I am waiting for him to get home. It’s always nice for a mom to know that her babies are safe and warm. When I was a kid I never understood my mom’s need to keep us at home but now I do.  Going back to the weather, I do dread winter every year. I can feel it creeping up on me. My body definitely notices. My depression starts to sink in like clockwork. It’s like a sinking feeling. “Sink” is definitely the word.

On the other hand, it does have it’s good points. I agree with Nigella Lawson, who said most of the winter’s compensation is culinary. There’s just something I love about her. Despite my Nigella worship, I was horrified when she posted a recipe for bacon and chocolate cupcakes on her Facebook page. I don’t understand this craze. I will have to pass. No thank you Mrs. Lawson. I’m happy to report that she isn’t perfect after all. I will, however, make use of her Scandinavian Cinnamon Roll recipe. The weather definitely calls for it. They certainly mark winter in this house as do Glühwein which means “glowing wine” in German, and Stollen. Yum.

There is also another reason I am glad there is a winter. Snuggling. It’s the best way to keep warm. I honestly don’t like to touch anybody else in the summer, especially in a country with no air conditioning. It’s just a hot sticky mess. Winter brings out the need in me to be cuddled and kept warm. This definitely explains why so many babies are born in the summer, myself included. According to some random article I read once, more babies are conceived on New Year’s than any other time of the year. Exactly 9 months later is October 5th, the most common birthday in America. Apparently the New Year’s Kiss doesn’t cut it. My best friend is part of this October 5th club and, yes, there is one. I guess there are some things in life the rest of us are not privy to – the riffraff.

Well, I’m gonna take my unworthy self and hit the road. I’ll be back around with something a little different Ciao :)

I would think 6 to 7 months of snow would depress anybody. I love the snow, but that is way too much. Try to get you some sun even if it is cold, or one of those light bulbs my mom was talking about, it will make you feel better. Btw, I always thought my mom got pregnant with me at a New Years Eve party. I was born on September the 10th.

That would mean you were born early.

You mean I was actually early for something for a change?!? I always joke that I’ll be late for my own funeral! :D

I am the same way. I was probably born late.
