I Want My MTV

What happened to MTV?  Today’s kids will never know the awesomeness that was MTV back in the 80′s, though my parents deemed it trash at the time. Now it really is trash. All they show nowadays is reality show crap which is shoved down our throats 24/7. I can’t seem to run fast enough from the Kardashians no matter how fast I run or to which corner of the earth I go. They seem to have infested every facet of our lives like a disease. The same is true for Jersey Shore with it’s parade of strange looking, orange people running around with their greasy hair and oily bodies. There has finally been some mercy shown due to it’s cancellation. Unfortunately, I happened upon an episode of Charm School a few years back where the hostess was just as bad, if not worse than the girls. I could go on and on but you get the point. At least I hope you do.

I remember when MTV first premiered. It was summer August 1st,1981, the day before my birthday, and we were visiting my dad’s twin brother and his 4 kids in New Haven, Connecticut. We loved those rare visits to seen our cousins. We all gathered on their huge, wraparound sofa and watched MTV air for the very first time. It seemed like heaven. All music, all the time. I was instantly smitten. I adored it from Day 1  – endless streams of Top 40 hits.  And let’s not forget MTV’s original VJs. In the beginning, there was Nina Blackwood, Mark Goodman, Alan Hunter, Martha Quinn and J.J. Jackson. At any time they could be interviewing the likes of Freddie Mercury or Michael Jackson. But long gone are Freddie and Michael and in their places we have Justin Bieber and Katy Perry. That thought is sending a shiver up my spine as we speak. I did watch things change over the years as they started to included shows like Rin & Stimpy and Aeon Flux, which I loved. As the years went by, they started adding more and more shows and it became less and less about the music until music was eliminated all together – very sad. It’s current incarnation consists of  pregant teenagers and shows like “I Love Money”. At this point, like American Idol, maybe they should just let it die peacefully. Last year marked 30 years of MTV, which it marked quietly, with no ballyhoo whatsoever. In the end, all I can say is  que sera sera, c´est la vie. I’m just glad I lived through the 80′s. It’s like not knowing your experiencing something great, but looking back you know you did :)

Loved the original MTV with music. Dont watch it much now. Although I do enjoy some reality tv, the shows on there just make me sad. I would rather watch something to pep me up like the music videos did. Nothing can get me motivated to move like good music. Thanks as always for sharing.

My mom watches Storage Wars. Drake watched it with her during the holidays. Sometimes I get sucked in too but as a general rule, I never watch.

I lived for 120 minutes on Sunday nights. During my first pregnancy I watched that show for insomniacs, because I had a severe case.
